30th April. Every year, the day Adolph Hitler committed suicide rolls around. This happens to be this writer’s birthday as well. It makes me think, how can we avoid ever subjecting our youth to such evil and such infamy as those Hitler years?Continue reading “Hopes for the future of our youth”

100th Centenary Muktamar of Muhamadiyah in Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Indonesia has two over-riding Muslim organizations guiding its huge Muslim population. Muhammadiyah, with over 30 million members, is Number Two, founded by Achmad Dahlan a hundred years ago. Nahdlatul Ulama (“NU”), which had the late President Gus Dur’s allegiance, has a slightly bigger membership.
There are quite noticeable differences in the styles of these two mammoth groups, although both are securely within the boundaries of what is permissible in Muslim culture. Muhammadiyah, for example, favors a mathematical calculation of the “new moon” that starts the month of Ramadan, while NU favors actual moonsighting.

Himpunan Keilmuan Muslim
Introductory remarks by HAKIM’s Founder & Chairman, Dr. Mohd Farid Mohd Shahran
Himpunan Keilmuan Muslim (HAKIM) is an organization formed with a great mission and vision to inculcate the true culture of knowledge in the Muslim society. This is in line with the Islamic intellectual tradition that regards knowledge as a great virtue reflected in the term hikmah. Hikmah (wisdom) springs from the faculty of reason (‘aql) which defines and distinguishes human being from the rest of God’s creation.
The Bible in Malay language – II
One might actually say that there is something wrong in the Prime Minister’s Office. A certain one of his ministers is talking exactly like a Christian preacher. He quotes from the Bible, and even offers an offensive comment that some people “long” for a “total revival” in Malaysia. Doesn’t the PM’s Office know that the term “revival” has a completely different meaning and connotation for Christians than for Muslims? And that the form and format of the Christian “revival” is completely against the Muslim belief?Continue reading “The Bible in Malay language – II”

The Bible in Malay language
Ideally, making the Bible available to Malaysian Christians should be a “no-brainer”, i.e., nothing there to even think about. Yet, the issue has become a true “tempest in a teapot”.
First, let’s be clear that the Bible, in whatever translation, is a piece of literature. Many people feel that Muslims should read it. A friend related to me of his encounter during an inter-faith visit at a local church, where he was surprised at how compatible the preacher’s sermon was with Muslim belief until a certain point. He further said that as guests in the church, we may always politely dismiss the singing, gender-mixed social seating, and prayer forms.Continue reading “The Bible in Malay language”
Seminar Alert: Issues on Operational Security for the Humanitarian Aid Worker
Seminar Alert: Issues on Operational Security for the Humanitarian Aid Worker, organized by Islamic Outreach ABIM & the International Committee of the Red Cross, 18 April 2011, Eastin Hotel, Petaling Jaya, Selangor
Background and Rationale
There has been growing interest among the local NGO community in Malaysia on the operational aspects of humanitarian aid. An increasing number of organizations and individuals are seeking for ways in which to contribute in a more tangible manner towards providing assistance for vulnerable populations around the world. It is arguable that the desire for a more direct and tangible participation in relief operations to better the lot of vulnerable populations is common among those already involved in humanitarian efforts. Unfortunately, an increase in the level of involvement in operational activities always comes with a corresponding increase in risk affecting the humanitarian aid worker.
