Conflict of Interest

For over thirty years, “the GOLKAR Umbrella” in Indonesia required all voting parties to register and be monitored by themselves. The result was a “one-party democracy” in which Suharto was usually credited with winning over 90% of any election, as has occurred in many other communist and third-world Muslim governments around the world.Continue reading “Conflict of Interest”

Secular Human Rights: End of the Road

The field of Anthropology begins and ends “on the ground”. Data is now emerging in the modern Malaysian political scene that is finally exposing certain problems in the person of a certain Muslim opposition figure that are leading us to realize the inherent incompatibility of Islamic Human Rights with the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human rights, which many countries signed years ago without realizing the implications to which they would now be leading.

Whither Harmony?

There are too many avowed Muslims resisting or even attacking the sincere efforts of uniting the people. As anticipated, following the HIMPUN event, a firestorm of press briefly flared, with the usual hate mongers jumping on the bandwagon, including among Muslims, and demonizing the organizers as religious extremists. The trend among some liberal Muslims now seems to be that anything to do with initiatives to defend Islam must be linked to UMNO or extremists.Continue reading “Whither Harmony?”

Kashmir Black Day 2011

Kashmir Black Day, the annual commemoration of the landing of Indian security forces in Srinagar on Oct. 27, 1947, is observed every year to highlight the plight of Kashmiris caused by India’s deployment of 700,000 troops in the valley. Thousands of its inhabitants had been martyred. The Jammu and Kashmir dispute is one of the oldest unresolved issues of the world and one that has always remained a top priority for many Islamic NGOs in Malaysia.Continue reading “Kashmir Black Day 2011”

Malaysia’s Internal Religious Harmony

Everyone agrees that a universal ethical ideal is harmony among peoples, especially those who are committed to their respective religion. And yet, some people, in particular after 9/11, now mistrust all “organized religion” as being troublesome on this harmony issue. It is urgent here in Malaysia that our Muslim leaders are seen unanimously to support the right steps taken to guarantee peace and security among the religions represented here, and especially to serve as an example to other Muslim countries of the true meaning of “Ummah“.Continue reading “Malaysia’s Internal Religious Harmony”

The parents will conduct a screening, and then give or withhold their consent, as they see fit.Continue reading “Respecting our parents”
