The new ‘human rights-ism’
Anthony Julius, a Manchester Guardian columnist makes the following comment in his article “Human Rights: the new secular religion:
“This new ‘human rights-ism’ accords great value to the United Nations – notwithstanding its inability to enforce its decisions, and its refusal to make practical demands of its members to be democratic or respect the human rights of their citizens.”

Dari 17 hingga 31 Oktober 2013, delegasi rasmi MuslimUPRo seramai 16 orang telah berada di Geneva, Switzerland sebagai sebahagian usaha melobi serta menjadi pemerhati semasa sesi UPR Malaysia berlangsung pada 24 Oktober 2013. Seramai 5 ahli delegasi telah ditauliahkan akreditasi pemerhati dengan status konsultansi NGO ECOSOC manakala 11 lagi sebagai pemerhati biasa.

COMANGO’s siege mentality
It is now less than 8 hours before Malaysia goes under review of her human rights record in the UPR process at the Human Rights Council, Geneva.
I have read an article by Honey Tan of COMANGO’s secretariat (here’s the full link) and, as has happened before, was initially impressed with her commendable writing skills. Then, as has also happened before, I watched her unravel a bit as she descended into ‘emotional’ remarks.

Alhamdulillah, we have safely arrived via Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport, after a 13-hours flight from Kuala Lumpur.
Friday afternoon was just a chance to settle down with the hotel check-in and visit the registration desk to collect the security pass for entry into the United Nations Building, or popularly known as Palais Des Nations. Security is strict for entry to the building for the session.
Strenghtening the Muslim position at the Universal Periodic Review
Article 3(1) of the Malaysian Federal Constitution states that “Islam is the religion of the Federation; but other religions may be practised in peace and harmony in any part of the Federation”. It has long been misconstrued as a mere official declaration. As a matter of fact, it designates Islam as the religion of the nation. Malaysia’s 2nd Evaluation under the Universal Periodic Review, 24th October 2013
Malaysia is fast approaching the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) session, to be held on October 24, 2013 at the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland. There were some reports sent individually to the Council by bodies such as the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International, the Bar Council, the International Commission of Jurists as well as other human rights-based NGOs. Malaysia‘s Second Evaluation under the Universal Periodic Review Process, Human Rights Council, Geneva
The coalition of Islamic NGOs in the UPR process (MuslimUPRo) will be sending a small delegation of observers to the UPR session involving Malaysia at the Human Rights Council, Geneva, Switzerland on 24th October 2013. Prior to this, it was the first time that the Islamic Non-Government Organisations were officially invited by Wisma Putra, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to attend a consultancy process for the preparation of a Malaysian national report to the Universal Periodic Review of the United Nations Human Rights Council.Continue reading “MuslimUPRo’s Media Statement 1st October 2013”
