The Ultimate Confrontation

On 12 September 2012 there will be a Regional Consultation on the Drafting of an ASEAN Human Rights Declaration. There will be attempts by LGBTs, NGOs, and various other activists to include LGBT rights and the right of absolute freedom of religion in the Declaration. Were ASEAN to endorse such rights in the final Declaration, Malaysia as a Muslim-majority country would have to reiterate her strong objections; as such a policy clearly contradicts the principles enshrined in the religion of Islam.Continue reading “The Ultimate Confrontation”

The Murder of a Sufi Leader

We have received recent reports of a Russian woman whose husband somehow persuaded her to commit suicide in the presence of a certain Sufi leader active in their community. Russian media quoted police as saying that Said Atsayev, a renowned Sufi Muslim spiritual leader popularly known as Shaykh Said Afandi al-Chirkawi, was killed in an attack when the woman entered his home disguised as his follower and detonated an explosive belt around her waist. The blast happened in the village of Chirkey in the southern republic, which borders Chechnya.

An important Ramadhan reminder

[Note] The following article on “The 10 Benefits of Hunger” by Hujjat al-Islam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali is from a mailing list I belong to.

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “combat the self with hunger and thirst, for there is reward in that.”

One might perhaps ask: “wherefrom is this great virtue of hunger? What is the reason for it when there is but pain for the stomach and harmful suffering? And if it is to be so, then man should be granted greater rewards for allowing the self to suffer such harm in denying the flesh what it craves and forcing it to accept the objectionable and the like.”

Muslim NGO contribution to address the “LGBT” danger

In order to build an impact on the secular forces sure to be articulate in the coming 2013 Periodic Review of human rights situations in Malaysia and the other countries selected for participation in this particular session, we must be clear enough within ourselves what the secular agenda really is, and we must design a suitable strategy for countering and enlightening this agenda to allow an uncorrupted adherence to our values within the community of nations however we find it at this moment in human history. The world as it is, is not unlike the Ummah in Madinah itself at the time of the Prophet (s.a.w.), in which many religions and customs were represented and powerfully participant in the life of the Madinah community.Continue reading “Muslim NGO contribution to address the “LGBT” danger”

Malaysia’s Internal Religious Harmony

Everyone agrees that a universal ethical ideal is harmony among peoples, especially those who are committed to their respective religion. And yet, some people, in particular after 9/11, now mistrust all “organized religion” as being troublesome on this harmony issue. It is urgent here in Malaysia that our Muslim leaders are seen unanimously to support the right steps taken to guarantee peace and security among the religions represented here, and especially to serve as an example to other Muslim countries of the true meaning of “Ummah“.Continue reading “Malaysia’s Internal Religious Harmony”
