Fears LGBTs will be left out of ASEAN rights declaration

[NOTE] The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) heads of government have formally adopted the first ever ASEAN Human Rights Declaration (AHRD) at the ASEAN Summit in  Phnom Penh on Nov 18. The declaration did not include ‘recognition of rights’ and ‘protections’ for the LGBTs. Please click here for the news confirmation.

President Sukarno, Founding Father of Indonesia, was in Central Kalimantan on one occasion, directing the design of Palangkaraya to become the capital of the entire Republic. His design is still on the boards, and there is recent debate whether to move the entire governmental structure to that location. All three Islamic-based political parties have suffered losses in recent parliamentary elections. Malaysia and neighboring countries are under a lot of pressure to offer legal and public recognition to the LGBTs, and will be under even more pressure at the United Nations in 2013, where Malaysia will be subjected to a review of her human rights commitments under the Universal Periodic Review by the UN Human Rights Council.

Southeast Asia: Latest battleground over LGBT rights

An upcoming human rights declaration by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has become the latest battleground over rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

On one side, the vice president of the Muslim Lawyers Association of Malaysia says his country could not accept including LGBT rights in an ASEAN declaration about human rights. Lawyer Azril Mohd Amin said in a letter to the Malaysiakini newspaper website that LGBT rights are a “secular fallacy, perpetrated by the United Nations, that human beings may do as they please,” Gay Star News reported.

The Ultimate Confrontation

On 12 September 2012 there will be a Regional Consultation on the Drafting of an ASEAN Human Rights Declaration. There will be attempts by LGBTs, NGOs, and various other activists to include LGBT rights and the right of absolute freedom of religion in the Declaration. Were ASEAN to endorse such rights in the final Declaration, Malaysia as a Muslim-majority country would have to reiterate her strong objections; as such a policy clearly contradicts the principles enshrined in the religion of Islam.Continue reading “The Ultimate Confrontation”

Al Qur’an makes it clear from the first Surah that the Shaitan will tempt and corrupt all human beings possible, since he is jealous that humankind is only made out of earthly mud while the Shaitan himself was one of the angels made out of fire. Pada 7 haribulan Mac 2012 baru-baru ini, Majlis Hak Asasi Manusia Pertubuhan Bangsa-bangsa Bersatu (PBB) telah menganjurkan suatu panel berkenaan “Diskriminasi dan Keganasan berdasarkan Orientasi Seksual dan Identiti Gender” yang berlangsung sebagai sebahagian acara tahunan sesi ke 19 Majlis Hak Asasi Manusia di Geneva, Switzerland. Panel tersebut telahpun mendapat bantahan daripada Kumpulan Negara OIC bagi Hak Asasi Manusia, yang telah mengirim sepucuk surat kepada Presiden Majlis Hak Asasi Manusia PBB, Laura Dupuy Lasserre bagi menyatakan kebimbangan Negara-negara OIC terhadap usaha untuk memperkenalkan di dalam Deklarasi Universal Hak Asasi Manusia terma-terma serta standard-standard berkenaan Orientasi Seksual dan identiti Gender yang asing di dalam “bahasa” dan “penerimaan nilai-nilai sejagat” berkenaan hak Lesbian, Gay, Biseksual dan Transeksual, serta dengan jelas menolak sebarang usaha untuk menjadikan orientasi Lesbian, Gay, Biseksual dan Transeksual (ringkasnya “LGBT“) sebagai nilai-nilai yang sepatutnya diterima semua Negara anggota PBB sebagai sebahagian dari hak-hak asasi manusia sejagat.Continue reading “Prinsip-prinsip Yogyakarta: Agenda Bahaya Berselindung Di sebalik Topeng Hak Asasi Manusia”
