The following is my brief response to the piece ‘Reclaiming higher moral ground‘:
The PEMBELA event on 7 May 2011 was held on a moderate scale. Unlike the ‘Shariah & Isu Semasa” forum back in July 2006 at Masjid Wilayah, which drew huge attendance of the public, the conservative target of the recent occasion was about 300 attendees (at least 150 turned up.) The recent gathering provided an occasion for the organizers to touch base with the leaders of Islamic NGOs while expanding our network base and to remind them of the long struggle that we must continue in light of the emerging issues, especially the ‘Al Kitab’ controversy.Continue reading “The hazards to Islamic NGOs”
The recent pandemonium in Masjid Amru Al-As is the direct responsibility of the authority holding back all news on the Anwar case. Technology is freely available to identify the “prominent politician” on that sex tape, yet this information is not released. If the man is NOT Anwar, we need to know NOW. If it IS Anwar, we also need to know. This issue must be buried as it has been the cause of tremendous derision of Malaysia and her “jungle politics”, in many countries of the world.Continue reading “On the recent pandemonium in Masjid Amru Al-As, Sentul”
30th April. Every year, the day Adolph Hitler committed suicide rolls around. This happens to be this writer’s birthday as well. It makes me think, how can we avoid ever subjecting our youth to such evil and such infamy as those Hitler years?Continue reading “Hopes for the future of our youth”
Indonesia has two over-riding Muslim organizations guiding its huge Muslim population. Muhammadiyah, with over 30 million members, is Number Two, founded by Achmad Dahlan a hundred years ago. Nahdlatul Ulama (“NU”), which had the late President Gus Dur’s allegiance, has a slightly bigger membership.
There are quite noticeable differences in the styles of these two mammoth groups, although both are securely within the boundaries of what is permissible in Muslim culture. Muhammadiyah, for example, favors a mathematical calculation of the “new moon” that starts the month of Ramadan, while NU favors actual moonsighting.

Introductory remarks by HAKIM’s Founder & Chairman, Dr. Mohd Farid Mohd Shahran
Himpunan Keilmuan Muslim (HAKIM) is an organization formed with a great mission and vision to inculcate the true culture of knowledge in the Muslim society. This is in line with the Islamic intellectual tradition that regards knowledge as a great virtue reflected in the term hikmah. Hikmah (wisdom) springs from the faculty of reason (‘aql) which defines and distinguishes human being from the rest of God’s creation.
One might actually say that there is something wrong in the Prime Minister’s Office. A certain one of his ministers is talking exactly like a Christian preacher. He quotes from the Bible, and even offers an offensive comment that some people “long” for a “total revival” in Malaysia. Doesn’t the PM’s Office know that the term “revival” has a completely different meaning and connotation for Christians than for Muslims? And that the form and format of the Christian “revival” is completely against the Muslim belief?Continue reading “The Bible in Malay language – II”
