Whither ABIM: Quietly and with Persistence

I wrote the following observations last year. It’ been almost 6 months. It’s been a strange season weather-wise.

It’s over for this generation of Islamic activists. We tried and failed, but time is on our side. We must plant the seeds for an Islamic future in the next generation through social change. We must alter the mindset and mentality of people through an Islamic value system. We do this through example and education. We do it quietly and with persistence.”

Agitating Malay Muslims

This article has been published earlier here.

By Shanon Shah | 03 March 2009 |

OVER the past year, several Malay-Muslim groups have been in the headlines. From lawsuits filed against the DAP‘s Teresa Kok for allegedly insulting Islam, to campaigns responding to the crisis in Gaza, the defence of Islam and Malay rights has occuppied the national attention, sometimes in frightening ways. Just what are these groups about? What motivates them? And do these non-governmental organisations (NGOs), some of which have mushroomed very quickly overnight, really express the will of the majority of Malay Muslims in Malaysia?

The Curse of Homosexuality

Not one single Muslim who prays for the soul of the Prophet Ibrahim (a.s.) and his progeny every day can possibly be anything OTHER than a “homophobe”. “Phobia” means an aversion or fear of something. It was the homosexuals that the Angels of Allah swt were going to warn, when they stopped at the abode of Prophet Ibrahim (a.s.) in disguise. Ibn Arabi explains their disguise to us, calling them “theophonic angels” – angels carrying messages to humans by being disguised as humans themselves. They stopped at the abode of Prophet Ibrahim (a.s.) to give him the news that he would soon be blessed with two sons who would become the spiritual exemplars and prophets of all future generations, Ishmael and Ishak.

There is relief and wisdom in hardship

Recently, I had to undergo epidural lysis procedure as a treatment for my back pain due to prolapsed discs.

The procedure was to help decrease chronic low back pain due to adhesions and scar tissue formation. The physician inserts a catheter into the epidural space in order to access the area of adhesions. This is usually done through the caudal canal, which is located at the base of the spine, via the sacral hiatus (quoting the surgeon’s exact words). The sacral hiatus is a natural opening in the spine near the tailbone. Aided by real-time X-ray imaging, the catheter can be seen on the monitor and directed precisely to the affected nerve root. Once the tip of the catheter is in place, medication can be injected to relieve pain at the source and dissipate the scar tissue.

Expletive Deleted: A Response to Raja Petra Kamaruddin

Malaysiakini commentary : ‘RPK the sailor-man’ riles up ABIM

The Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) was recently assaulted by Raja Petra Kamaruddin in his Malaysia Today column “No Holds Barred“. A response is in order, with the expletives he has resorted to not included. At threshold, one should note that Muslims and all civilized people are encouraged to rationally and responsibly discuss issues, and discouraged from using inappropriate language. ABIM believes in civilized resolution of conflict, not accusatory statements, especially those without substance and stated in sailor’s language.Continue reading “Expletive Deleted: A Response to Raja Petra Kamaruddin”
