Muslims Must Lead the Future

This letter was published in the New Straits Times today.

Malaysia has managed to escape the ravages to governance that has now struck a number of Muslim countries, most lately in what is being called the “Arab Spring“. The problems being face are related to the western plunder of earth resources, such as oil and natural gas that are vital to maintaining the vaunted western “style of life”.Continue reading “Muslims Must Lead the Future”

Islamic NGOs To Submit Proposals Concerning Human Rights To Government

Originally reported here.

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 5 (Bernama) — Over 20 Islamic non-governmental organisations (NGOs) will submit several proposals to the government concerning human rights issues that can threaten the sovereignty of Islam in Malaysia for the universal periodic review (UPR) purposes.

Malaysian Muslim Lawyers Association vice-president Azril Mohd Amin said the UPR would give the opportunity to the ruling government in 192 countries, including Malaysia, to declare the actions that could improve human rights in their respective countries.

A brief response to the Malaysian Bar President’s media statement

LGBTIQs? What do these phrases mean? In Indonesia, the “Q” has been publicly called “queer”. What sort of language is THIS for legislation? Even Mr. Lim Chee Wee, President of the Malaysian Bar in his press statement on 3 December 2012, cannot explain the Malaysian meaning of “Q”, which he says is “questioning”. This matter has far transcended natural politics. It has become, in medical terms, morbid. It is a matter for doctors and psychiatrists to address, not politicians.

Rohingyas: Support the call for Global Day of Action

Why is it that many Muslims never even noticed the Rohingyas until the recent attempts to cleanse them ethnically from Myanmar soil? How is it that the Myanmar opposition leader, recently triumphant in her release from House Arrest, wears a pretty white flower in her hair while she condones the killing of thousands of Rohingyas?Continue reading “Rohingyas: Support the call for Global Day of Action”

On the Islamic State

Published in Malaysiakini.

President Sukarno, Founding Father of Indonesia, was in Central Kalimantan on one occasion, directing the design of Palangkaraya to become the capital of the entire Republic. His design is still on the boards, and there is recent debate whether to move the entire governmental structure to that location. All three Islamic-based political parties have suffered losses in recent parliamentary elections. Furthermore, government workers complain bitterly at the overcrowding in present-day Jakarta.Continue reading “On the Islamic State”

Southeast Asia: Latest battleground over LGBT rights

Originally published here.

An upcoming human rights declaration by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has become the latest battleground over rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people.

On one side, the vice president of the Muslim Lawyers Association of Malaysia says his country could not accept including LGBT rights in an ASEAN declaration about human rights. Lawyer Azril Mohd Amin said in a letter to the Malaysiakini newspaper website that LGBT rights are a “secular fallacy, perpetrated by the United Nations, that human beings may do as they please,” Gay Star News reported.

The Ultimate Confrontation

http://www.malaysiakini.com/letters/208463

On 12 September 2012 there will be a Regional Consultation on the Drafting of an ASEAN Human Rights Declaration. There will be attempts by LGBTs, NGOs, and various other activists to include LGBT rights and the right of absolute freedom of religion in the Declaration. Were ASEAN to endorse such rights in the final Declaration, Malaysia as a Muslim-majority country would have to reiterate her strong objections; as such a policy clearly contradicts the principles enshrined in the religion of Islam.Continue reading “The Ultimate Confrontation”

The many faces of Genocide

http://www.malaysiakini.com/letters/206569

How many instances of attempted genocide have we seen since 1900? Some would say the Turks tried to eliminate the Armenians. The Armenians are sure of it. Hitler admittedly tried to eliminate all Jews from the face of the earth. People did not quite believe him until the actual death camps were discovered. If you stand in one of them, for example Auschwitz in Poland, there can be no question what went on there. There can be no question anything ELSE went on there. It is plain as day. Even then, the world didn’t want to believe it.Continue reading “The many faces of Genocide”
